Where the Gods Come to Play

We live in a continual tension between light and darkness—a struggle that is both cosmic and deeply personal. Many believe it is darkest before dawn, a phrase that can describe the human psyche as readily as it describes the moment when the sun lies farthest below the horizon before giving way to a new day. Nature itself moves through endless cycles: every six hours the tides rise and fall, revealing and concealing the shoreline in an unceasing rhythm of transformation.

In my multi-year project, Where the Gods Come to Play, the sand becomes my canvas, while the tides and wind serve as my collaborators. I photograph the abstract nature and convergence of quartz, magnetite, ilmenite, hematite, and other minerals as waves continually reshape the beach, revealing fleeting forms that seem to emerge from another dimension. These ephemeral patterns suggest celestial landscapes, bold graphic abstractions, and mythological creatures before they disappear beneath the next wave.

Working with what is essentially a monochromatic palette, I distill these granular landscapes into black-and-white photographs. Stripped of distraction, the images invite contemplation of their quiet poetry and stark beauty. They remind us that nature is in constant flux, creating moments of extraordinary complexity and wonder that exist only briefly before being reclaimed by the sea.

My photographs are collaborations with time, tide, wind, and chance—records of transient worlds that appear, vanish, and reappear in an endless cycle of creation and dissolution. We also become increasingly aware that climate change continues to alter the shape of our coastlines creating opportunity to witness the intrinsic beauty as well as the erosion and destruction of our natural habitats.

Enjoy!
